Peculiar physical properties and colossal magnetoresistance of manganites

An attempt made to analyze the most important physical properties of La-Ca-Mn-O type manganites, exhibiting the effect of colossal magnetoresistance. The main emphasis is centered on the specificity of these compounds that is reflected in their crystalline, electronic and magnetic structures and may be responsible for possible mechanisms of the considerable effect of external magnetic field on the transport properties of charge carriers in manganites. The joint action of the above factors ultimately provides a means for the metal-insulator phase transition sensitive to external magnetic field. One of the desirable and relevant goals of the paper is a discussion of the scientific problems in the physics of manganites.
