Observation of coexistence of crystalline and liquid-like states in argon clusters doped with krypton

Abstract

A superposition of narrow diffraction maxima and wide halo bands is found for large mixed Ar–Kr clusters (N = (6-9)·104 atoms/cluster). The superposition reflects the coexistence of a crystalline solution and a short-range order (liquid-like) phase component. This effect has not been previously observed either for atomic macrosystems or for large atomic clusters. The result obtained is supposed to be due to some nonclassical properties of large argon clusters doped with krypton.
