Surface instability of liquid hydrogen and helium

Abstract

The experimental data on instability at the charged and neutral surfaces of liquid hydrogen and helium are considered. The charged surface loses its stability when the intensity of applied electric field reaches a critical value, and the neutral surface becomes unstable when the velocity of liquid flow under the surface reaches some critical value. In both situations the surface is affected by an additional pressure which is responsible for the instability.
