The physical operation principle of whispering gallery mode disk lasers (WGM lasers) is considered. A new method of measuring single pass gain is proposed. The theory of cylindrical waveguides is considered. The spectral characteristics of WGM lasers are measured at temperatures ranged from 4 to 300 K. It is shown that WGM lasers are very promising as laser sources operating at room temperatures.
