Magneto-elastic interaction and acoustic nonreciprocity in GdNi2B2C

Abstract

The ultrasonic researches of single crystal gadolinium borocarbide has been carried out. It is found that the acoustic characteristics are very sensitive to magnetic phase transformations, due to the interaction of sound waves with the antiferromagnetic domain structure. An acoustic «nonreciprocity» with the same nature has been also discovered. Arguments in favor of the existence of weak ferromagnetism in GdNi2B2C are adduced.
