Hysteresis jumps of surface reactance of layered superconductor with changing amplitude of Incident wave

Abstract

A nonlinear response of a layered superconductor to symmetrical (with respect to magnetic field) electromagnetic excitation is studied theoretically. A multiple-valued dependence of reflected signal on incident-wave amplitude H0 is predicted. As a result, hysteresis jumps in the dependence of superconductor surface reactance H0 occur. If the frequency of irradiating field is close to the Josephson plasma frequency, this unusual nonlinear effect can be observed for not very strong amplitudes of ac field. The conditions for occurring the hysteresis are obtained. Expressions for phase shift of the reflected wave are derived using the coupled sine-Gordon equations. Moreover, studied is the class of spatially discontinuous solutions of these equations, which correspond to continuous spatial distributions of magnetic field in the superconductor. Such solutions result in the appearance of additional branches in the dependence of phase shift of the reflected wave on the amplitude of the incident wave.
